How is e-bike range actually calculated?
Range is usable battery energy divided by energy used per mile. A pack's capacity in watt-hours (volts × amp-hours) is the fuel tank; this tool assumes about 90% of it is usable in practice. Consumption per mile rises with a higher assist level, a heavier rider-plus-cargo load, and hillier terrain. Divide the usable watt-hours by that per-mile figure and you get the estimated distance.
Why is my real range lower than the manufacturer's claim?
Brochure ranges are measured in ideal conditions — a light rider, flat ground, low assist, warm weather, and a smooth steady pace. Real commuting adds hills, headwind, cold (which cuts battery capacity), stop-start riding at junctions, low tyre pressure, and heavier loads. Any of those can knock 20-40% off the claimed number, which is why this calculator lets you set assist, weight, and terrain rather than quoting one headline figure.
Does riding in Turbo really use that much more battery?
Yes. Higher assist means the motor supplies more of the power for every mile, so it draws far more from the pack. Eco might use around 10 Wh per mile, Turbo more than double that. The trade-off is effort versus range: drop to a lower assist on the flat and save the battery for the hills, and a single charge stretches much further.
Is this an exact guarantee of range?
No. It is a planning estimate built from your inputs and typical consumption figures. Battery chemistry ages, temperature swings, wind, and your own pedalling all move the result. Treat the number as a realistic ballpark for planning a commute or a ride, and keep a margin — arriving with 20% left is far better than coasting in on empty.
